New dental technology to eliminate dentures

New dentures look more natural and fitted

(WPRI) – Dentures are still a reality for some over the age of 55 and a big inconvenience. As a result of a new dental technology, many younger people will never have to know what it’s like to have dentures.
Many patients who have dentures say they have had to replace them several times, but those who have gotten this new procedure say it was easy and created a better fit for them.
At the age of 18, Charlie Thrush was diagnosed with a serious gum disease, called Pyria which caused him to lose all of his teeth. For the past 50 years he has had to wear dentures, which have given him several problems.
“I was having problems with ‘em, staying in my mouth number one,” said Thrush.
Charlie recently heard about a digital imaging procedure that creates fitted dentures through specific measurements that are programmed into a computer. The computer then makes a 3-D model which is used to shape the dentures. The dentures look more natural and provide the person with other health benefits.
“You have less sore spots, and with the better fit dentures you have less bone loss, you have less adherence of bacteria to the dentures and less denture smell,” said Dr. Youssef Obeid.
Since fitting only requires two visits, it also means less time spent at the doctor’s office. “Everybody who looks at me says I have beautiful teeth. I don’t tell them they’re false. I say, thank you,” said Thrush.

Dental lab technicians mix technology with craftsmanship

April 22, 2013|Tribune Media Services

If you're looking for a career in dental health that offers a blend of science and art, consider the field of dental laboratory technology.
Dental laboratory technicians make and repair orthodontic devices such as dentures, bridges, crowns and braces. They use precision instruments and equipment, such as small hand drills, to create practical and esthetically pleasing dental replacements. Using their artistic abilities, lab techs create these dental devices using materials such as gold, silver, porcelain, plastics and stainless steel.

A typical process goes something like this: First, dentists send a description of the item to be manufactured, along with an impression of the patient's mouth or teeth. Then, a dental lab technician creates a model of the patient's mouth by pouring plaster into the impression and allowing it to set. Next, they place the model on an apparatus that mimics the bite and movement of the patient's jaw.
Technicians examine the model, note the size and shape of the adjacent teeth, as well as gaps within the gum line. Based upon these observations and the dentist's specifications, technicians build and shape a wax tooth or teeth model, using small hand instruments called wax spatulas and wax carvers. They use this wax model to cast the metal framework for the prosthetic device.
In some laboratories, technicians perform all stages of the work, and in other labs, each technician specializes in only a few. Dental lab technicians can specialize in five areas: orthodontic appliances, crowns and bridges, complete dentures, partial dentures, or ceramics. For example, technicians who make porcelain and acrylic restorations are often called dental ceramists.
As each patient's teeth and needs are different, so too are the duties of a dental lab technician. A typical day could involve creating: full dentures for patients missing all of their teeth; removable partial dentures or fixed bridges for patients who are missing only one or a few teeth; crowns, or caps for teeth that are designed to restore their original size and shape; veneers that enhance the esthetics and function of the patient; or orthodontic appliances and splints to help straighten and protect teeth.

Education and training requirements
Dental lab technicians typically receive education and training through a two-year program at a community college, vocational school, technical college, university or dental school. Graduates of these programs receive either an associate degree or a certificate. Some programs offer a four-year baccalaureate program in dental technology.
In most cases, a high school diploma or equivalent is required to apply to an accredited dental lab technology program.
Dental laboratory technicians become certified by passing an exam administered by the National Board for Certification in Dental Laboratory Technology, which evaluates technical skills and knowledge. Certified technicians usually specialize in one or more of five areas: complete dentures, removable partial dentures, crown and bridge, ceramics or orthodontics.

Implant Dentist Vancouver Offers Free Consultation for Radical New Dentistry Practice

British Columbia, Canada -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/27/2013 -- Early in the 20th Century it was a common practice in some parts of the world when individuals lost some of their teeth to simply remove the rest and replace them with dentures, meaning they would never again suffer from the problems associated with tooth decay, abscesses and the like. With the benefit of modern technology, this practice looks as if it may come full circle, and one dentist in Vancouver is ahead of the curve with a radical new offer on cosmetic dentistry, offering to replace teeth with dental implants instead of bleaching or straightening.

Dental Implants Vancouver is the website of Dr Shahdad Ayoughi, who is pioneering the new service within Canada. To help promote what at first may seem like a radical premise, Dr Ayoughi is offering free consultations to discuss the procedure.

DDental Implants Vancouver already contains a great deal of information on the process through which dental implants work, replacing the existing imperfect teeth with digitally modeled implants identical to real teeth but impervious to imperfections caused by plaque, tooth decay and irregular growth. The cost of dental implants in Vancouver is also be discussed.

The implants are fitted directly into the gum line but do not interfere with the nervous system of the patient, and fit naturally into the impression left by the original tooth, while correcting its outward visual appearance. This permanent replacement cannot be discerned from the original tooth, or in the case of multiple teeth, can be intelligently designed to correct dental appearance without the need for years of wearing braces.

A spokesperson for Dental Implants Vancouver explained, “While the treatment may seem somewhat radical, once people get over the initial shock it quickly becomes clear that the advantages are so numerous as to make it the obvious way forward. Perfect teeth forever, without the need for retainers or moulds to hook single dentures around the existing teeth. It’s an evolution in dentistry that we’ve been waiting for a long time, and after a free consultation, individuals will be sure to see the advantages.”

About Dental Implants Vancouver
Dental Implants Vancouver is a new website offering a service exclusively available from the dental practice of Dr Shahdad Ayoughi, wherein imperfect, broken, rotten or damaged teeth are replaced with dental implants, a new innovation that has all the advantages of both natural teeth and dentures. Dental Technician students gets boost

For those who are anxious to get into a career in the dental profession, there is good news.
Many prospective students, especially in the Lower Mainland area, have been looking to take a Dental Technician program but have found it difficult due to the severe lack of institutions that provide such training and education. Up until now, there have been only five approved colleges that offer the Dental Technician program throughout Canada - with Vancouver Community College being the only one in B.C.
This has resulted in considerably long wait-list times that can reach up to two years or more despite the growing shortage of skilled professionals in the field.
In response, CDI College submitted its application to offer the Dental Technician program, and has recently celebrated joining the list of approved institutes.
"CDI College''s Dental Technician program will provide its students with everything they need, from state-of-the-art labs to the well-qualified professors that bring their own success and personal hands-on experience to the classroom," said Joseph Wallace, R.D.T, Program Head for Dental Technology at CDI College.
Wallace brings eight years of teaching experience in the Dental Technician program at Vancouver Community College and four years of professional experience as inspector and technical assistant at the College of Dental Technicians of British Columbia, the regulatory body for the profession of Dental Technology in B.C.
Wallace joined CDI College as he found it meaningful "to be able to offer the program to more students in the community, and in the country as a whole."
Reflecting on his past experience to improve the existing programs, he incorporated a longer practicum time and the latest technology, such as CAD/CAM (Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Manufacturing) in CDI College''s new curriculum. Graduates are eligible to write the licensure exams required to practise with the College of Dental Technicians of British Columbia.
Dental laboratory technology is a flexible career offering several opportunities for advancement. Experienced technicians can find well-paid positions in commercial laboratories based on their technical or communication skills, become department heads in larger laboratories where they would have supervisory responsibilities, or potentially own their own laboratory.
Dental technicians may also teach dental technology courses in educational programs and apply their knowledge to research, sales and/or marketing of prosthetic materials, instruments and equipment. Annual salaries vary depending on one's years of experience, the size of the lab, and the range of duties and tasks one is assigned in the position.
CDI College has been helping students achieve career goals and aspirations for more than 40 years. With 25 campus locations across Canada, including Surrey, CDI College offers more than 50 industry-influenced diploma programs in the fields of business, technology, healthcare, early childhood education, legal studies and art and design.
